Smoking and vaping outdoors: How readers reacted to the prospect of a ban
Nottinghamshire Live readers have reacted en masse to a report suggesting many Britons want pub gardens to ban smoking and vaping.
Following a survey of 2,000 adults by Swedish Match, the results revealed that more than six in ten Britons want pub gardens to ban smoking and vaping.
The report also notes that Oxfordshire is considering a smoking ban for outdoor hospitality as part of plans to become the first smoke-free county by 2025.
So what do Nottinghamshire Live readers think of such a ban? We took to Facebook to ask the question and got over 440 comments and over 400 reactions.
Some were angry at the suggestion.
Donna Redfearn wrote: âThey kicked us out inside pubs because they didn’t want to breathe our smoke, but now that the good weather is finally here, they want us to quit smoking outside. I didn’t hear them complaining in the middle of winter when we had to go out. “
And the question united some smokers and non-smokers.
Mike Bottomley wrote: “I hate smoking, but I really don’t mind if it’s outside. I needed to ban inside, but I don’t agree to quitting it there too. ‘outside.”
With Lyndsay Ashcroft adding “I don’t smoke and I don’t see why this is a problem. If you are out and someone at the next table is smoking and you are bothered by it, then get moving. The pubs are already struggling. . Why try to make it harder. Stay home if you don’t like it lol. “
Lyndsay wasn’t the only one worried about the impact such a ban would have on hotel businesses.
Neil J O’Mahoney commented: “If pubs are already having a hard time attracting people, then banning smoking or vaping outside will prevent even more people from going to the pub, it will be commercial suicide!”
Vi Walmsley said: “I think people have taken enough of it, so maybe they have space for people who want to smoke, so if someone doesn’t like it they can choose to go. sit somewhere else. If it’s stopped, it will really kill the pub trade too. “
And advocating for smoking outdoors as long as people were considerate was smoker Laura Hutchinson who said: âAs a smoker myself. I am actually very respectful of the people around me. children are nearby or if people are eating nearby I will find a place away from people. Smokers should respect non-smokers and children. But non-smokers should also be aware that you are at it. outside and that this place is the only place smokers can go, even when it’s raining. “
But not everyone shared the point of view.
While Lee Bailey thought âSmoking should be banned completely,â Rob Shore said: âI think during the pandemic, probably yes for now, but I’m not banning it completely. I understand why no smoker wants to. ban it because he doesn’t like it, but we can’t make people who smoke / vape quit.
