New Orleans Saints rookie out for 2022 season

AUBURN – rookie and former New Orleans Saints Auburn football stands out on Smoke Monday tore his anterior cruciate ligament and is out for the 2022 season, he announced on Instagram on Friday.

The rookie signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent after being widely tipped as a late-round pick in April. The 6-foot-3 safety was officially placed on the disabled list on Friday.

“I’m doing great and in good spirits,” Monday said in his Instagram post, “and I’m going to have surgery very soon. I plan to use this time to be healthier and continue to learn the system. from top to bottom… Trust that I will be 10 times stronger when I return.”

Monday had 63 tackles, including two sacks, and five pass breakups his senior season at Auburn as a free safety. He returned an interception for a touchdown three straight years, including in Auburn’s memorable 2019 Iron Bowl win over Alabama.

Monday’s reputation out of college was his elite defense and hard-hitting approach, belied by potential gaps in pro-level coverage skills.

“When I come to the NFL, I’ll always bet on myself,” he told the Montgomery Advertiser ahead of the draft. “It’s just who I am, man. I know I’m going to prove a lot of people wrong, what they think of me and what kind of player they think I am.”
