Motorists warned, throwing lit cigarettes into weeds could start grass fire in Woodhaven

It’s happened twice this year already, and the Woodhaven Fire Department is hoping it won’t happen again.

So far there have been two grass fires near Van Horn and I-75, one in April and another on May 15.

The newer grass fire that swept through the west and east sides of I-75 and could be seen for miles.

He was pushed by the strong winds, which made the fire even bigger.

Fire crews from Flat Rock, Gibraltar, Rockwood and Huron Township helped bring the blaze under control.

Woodhaven Fire Chief Michael Clark is asking motorists and people passing through the area not to light lit cigarettes outside car windows or grass.

When temperatures are high and the grass is dry, he said, there is a greater risk of fire.

A cigarette is more than enough spark to start another grass fire.

Trains passing through the region are a direct cause of many fires. Sparks fly under the train and spread through the weeds.

Clark said the Department of Public Works is cutting weeds, which grow exceptionally tall in this area.

Clark said these types of fires usually don’t happen until later in the year.
