29.84 lakh cigarettes seized by customs

LUDHIANA: As part of a major anti-smuggling campaign, customs broker Ludhiana seized 29.84 lakh sticks of cigarettes worth several crore which were illegally imported under the guise of dry dates.
According to the declaration made by the importer, the containers only contained 1120 bags of dry dates, but in reality there were fewer bags of dry dates than those declared in the shipment and the rest of the space was used for conceal a huge amount of cigarettes. .
The ministry has registered a case against the importer and a further investigation is underway. The action was taken by customs officials at Inland container depot (ICD) CONCOR situated in Dhandari Kalan and the arrest of some people seems likely in this case.
Giving more information, Arvinder Singh Ranga, Commissioner of Customs Ludhiana said: “A company based in Ludhiana imported two containers from Dubai which contained 1120 bags of dry dates. Company through its custom House the agent (CHA) filed the entry invoice for this shipment on May 13 and in the documents submitted by the company it was stated that there were 560 bags of dry dates in each of these two containers of forty feet.
After that, our team decided to examine this import shipment and a thorough inspection procedure of the two containers was initiated in the presence of the Deputy Commissioner (hangar), Superintendent (discount), other officials and the CHA ”
Ranga also added: “Upon examining the two containers, they turned out to contain bags of dry dates near the doors and in the front, but in the back a huge cache of cigarettes had been hidden. After preliminary findings, one hundred percent stripping of the goods was ordered and in action, 250 cartons of cigarettes (120 Esse brand cartons, 20 Benson & Hedges brand cartons and 110 Gudang Garam brand cartons) were found in these two containers. A total of 29.84,000 sticks of cigarettes were found hidden behind the dry date bales and the total value of these seized cigarettes is approximately Rs 3,08,40,000. As the cigarettes have not been declared, the importation of them will be treated as prohibited and, as a result, the declared goods and the cigarettes have both been seized under Panchnama as of May 19, 2021. A Further investigation is underway and the arrest will be carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Customs Law of 1962 ”
