In the interview, Hill looks back on his 20 years and his sudden success following “Superbad” in 2007.

“It was very ‘overnight’ for me,” recalls Hill. “Michael Cera and I talk about it all the time. We just had this really rare experience: one day life was one way, then one day life was another way. Right after ‘Superbad’ I took a writing job on Brüno [with Sacha Baron Cohen]. I was 23 and they asked me to host ‘SNL’ for the first time. And I didn’t want to leave the screenwriters room. I was like, ‘Guys, I don’t know what to do.’ It was my first job at Sacha. And Sacha said to me, ‘Dude, you should go host “SNL”.’ For me, having a writing job for Sacha Baron Cohen was as great as hosting “SNL”.

Hill also talks about taking a step back to reset after making his movie “Mid90s” in 2018.

“Throughout my 20s, I didn’t really look inside,” he says. “I was just running for success. Or try to find success. And when I was 30, I was like, ‘I’ve always wanted to be a director, but if I don’t get off this train now and write’ Mid90s ‘, I won’t.’ And I press pause. It took me three or four years to reshape things. I was like, “I could just do this for 10 more years and I’m not going to evolve as a person.”

Now at 37, Hill is looking at the younger generations and seeing the effects of social media.

“So Instagram. Instagram – as I smoke a cigarette – is the cigarette of this time, ”he theorizes. “He’s the biggest killer. It’s death. And I participate fully, as if I were smoking cigarettes. Again, this is a range of what you find healthy. I must have really limited interaction with her.

Hill continues, “And so for me, I’m not criticizing anyone. I’ll post a selfie on Instagram. I do not care. I am as hypocrite as everyone else. So the point is, it may all be a work in progress to achieve happiness. But the real truth is, we are selling a movie here. You like me, but you can have lunch with me. You are doing this to help your film. I’m doing this because they asked me to do the cover of a fashion magazine. And finally I think it’s cool. My ego is being caressed somehow, so I said yes. And great! Today I play a different game. Maybe tomorrow I’ll be less self-centered.
