Illegal cigarettes and tobacco found hidden in Leamington Spa sewers
More than 32,000 illegal cigarettes and 100 packets of tobacco were found hanging over raw sewage under a Warwickshire manhole cover.
The cigarettes and tobacco were discovered by Warwickshire County Council Trade Standards officers when they visited a store in the Leamington Spa area.
During a series of raids, they also discovered suspected counterfeit and unpaid cigarettes and tobacco hidden in an outside drain, in wheeled bins by the side of the road and in a secret hiding place behind shelves.

Andy Crump, Warwickshire County Council Community Safety Portfolio Holder, said: “The availability of cheap illegal cigarettes and tobacco makes it easier for young people to start smoking and more difficult for existing smokers to quit.
“The criminal gangs that sell these products are warned that there is nowhere they can hide these products, that we will not find them.”
“Warwickshire trade standards will continue to disrupt the activities of illegal sellers and suppliers of cigarettes and tobacco in Leamington Spa and Warwickshire. “
