Groups write to NBC demanding smoking ban on BBNaija

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) and the Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance (NTCA) on Friday wrote a petition to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) demanding a smoking ban in season 6 of Big Brother Naija, which will debut longer. late this month.

CAPPA and NTCA in the letter titled Big Brother Naija Season 6: NBC Should Enforce Entertainment Ban on Smoking, and addressed to NBC Managing Director Babalola Shehu Ilelah, praised the agency for banning nudity in the show.

He, however, urged NBC to extend its radar to smoking which they say is glamorous on the show.

The groups said roommates who smoke in the BBNaija house are leaving a huge impression on young people at a time when the Nigerian government is working diligently to reduce the initiation of smoking.

They added: “It’s even worse at a time when the country is grappling with the COVID -19 pandemic as it has been established that smokers have a greater possibility of developing complications or even death. they contract the coronavirus. “

During season 3 of the reality show in 2018, Big Brother temporarily banned roommates from drinking alcohol, smoking, and using swear words in the house. The temporary ban on abusive language and drunkenness was announced by Miracle, the new head of the house at the time. The ban was then lifted.

What the law says

The letter, jointly signed by CAPAP Executive Director Akinbode Oluwafemi and NTCA Program Director Chibuike Nwokorie drew NBC’s attention to the National Tobacco Control Act 2015 and the National Tobacco Control Regulations 2019. two laws contain specific provisions that prohibit tobacco advertising and promotion. , and sponsorship (TAPS).

Article 12 (1) of the NTC law defines tobacco advertising and promotion as including “any form of commercial communication, recommendation or action with the aim, effect or probable effect of promoting a product. tobacco or tobacco use directly or indirectly.

The article states that: “No one shall promote or advertise tobacco or tobacco products in any form. “

They also referred to the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO-FCTC) which Nigeria has signed and ratified. The framework requires parties to implement a comprehensive tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship ban (TAPS).

They stated: “Specifically, the guidelines for the implementation of Article 13 of the WHO-FCTC include a statement that the portrayal of tobacco use in films is a form of promotion that influences l tobacco use, especially among young people.

“WHO says films and entertainment materials are the tobacco industry‘s most valuable tools, which have been instrumental in transferring ideas and promoting alternative lifestyles to children. Children, generally impressionable, are drawn to what they see and are introduced to the use of tobacco products through subliminal advertising and promotion of smoking scenes in movies, music videos and film placements. products.

While noting that the BBNaija reality show is one of the biggest on-screen shows in Nigeria watched by millions of young people, they pointed out that since its inception, it has been known to promote smoking among roommates.

They said in BBNaija’s home: “Cigarettes are conspicuously displayed and recklessly smoked, with total disregard for the health of potential non-smoking roommates. “

They urged the NBC to therefore invoke the NTC-Act 2015 and the NTC Regulations 2019 and to ban smoking altogether in season 6 of BBN, stressing that at this stage of a global pandemic, no effort should be spared to protect the health of citizens. .
