Chris Sullivan reveals heartbreaking facts about obsessive smoking accident and what it means for Kate and Toby

It’s us Season 6 has scattered signs throughout its aired episodes that indicate the end is near for the couple. But one clue in particular points to a specific day that ended their marriage. And Chris Sullivan, who plays Toby, previewed what that day will look like for the Pearsons.
Smoking incident will lead to Kate and Toby’s divorce in ‘This Is Us’ season 6
Thanks to a flash-forward scene from the It’s us Season 5 finale, fans know Kate and Toby are divorced and Kate and Phillip will get married in the future. But another scene takes place in the future from It’s us Season 6 Episode 3 revealed more about the day the couple decided to go their separate ways.
Adult Jack and his wife Lucy had a barbecue where he used a Big Green Egg Smoker. They discussed how Jack’s earliest memory involves the smoker and how the accident left a scar on his forehead. And, at one point, Lucy said, “You know, you don’t have to keep using that stuff. It’s like the literal symbol of the day your mother and father’s marriage fell apart.
So fans know that no matter what, the day of the smoking accident will be the final straw that will shatter Kate and Toby’s marriage for good. It’s us.
Chris Sullivan provides insight into the explosive accident
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, It’s us Star Chris Sullivan has teased the Big Green Egg smoking incident and how Kate and Toby’s marriage ended.
“There’s always a turning point, even though there are a thousand little moments that lead to that turning point,” the actor revealed. “The Big Green Egg is a symbol of a day when we come to this crossroads. But you can’t get to that crossroads without walking a mile. All you see now are these steps towards this inevitability.
Although Kate and Toby decide to end their marriage on Jack’s first memory day, that’s not the only reason they’re divorcing. The tension that fans are currently seeing between the couple is also causing their separation.
Further teasing what happened on the day of the crash, Sullivan said, “When the smoke clears, the line will have been drawn.”
The actor’s comments are very disturbing. We wonder if the accident will affect anyone other than Kate and Toby in It’s us Season 6.
When can fans expect to see Kate and Toby split up in ‘This Is Us’ Season 6?
Before It’s us Season 6 premiere Chrissy Metz, who plays Kate, discussed the latest episodes with Entertainment Weekly. And it looks like the Big Green Egg smoker accident could happen in Episode 9. Metz said, “The episode that I got to co-write, which is [episode] 9, which is Kate’s episode, is going to be a watershed moment for Kate and Toby.
Interestingly, Metz called the episode a “turning point” for Kate and Toby, and Sullivan described the smoking incident as a “turning point” for the couple. Perhaps fans should expect to see the two decide to go their separate ways in Episode 9.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Metz also shared some information about the couple’s divorce. The actor revealed, “None of them are right, and none of them are wrong. It’s just that people go their separate ways. So there’s this mutual love and respect — and, of course, for their children and the life they have created together, but also the life they want to share, even if they are not together.
It’s us Season 6 returns with new episodes February 22 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
