BBC EastEnders: June Brown’s life after Dot Cotton drank Guinness ‘to keep her weight down’ and ‘not counting the number of cigarettes’ she has a day

The actress behind BBC EastEnders’ Dot Cotton has opened up about her life after the show, revealing she plans to have some fun as she will “soon” die anyway. June Brown now plans to continue a diet of wine, chocolate and cigarettes. She loves dark chocolate and eats it regularly, although she is “allergic” to it.

June, 95, celebrated her birthday yesterday and played the much-loved character on the show for 35 years, before her character moved to Ireland in 2020. She was nominated for numerous awards during her time on EastEnders, including including the BAFTA TV award for Best Actress in 2009. Although she did not win the award, she was only the second soap opera actress to be nominated for a BAFTA.

Dot Cotton turned 95 on February 16, 2022.

In 2005, she won Lifetime Achievement at the British Soap Awards, 15 years before stepping down from her role aged 93. The actress revealed that her deteriorated eyesight made her role difficult towards the end of her career as she had trouble reading scripts and couldn’t recognize people.

Her character, Dot Cotton, was a laundry assistant with a passion for cigarettes and gossip. She was also a devout Christian, known for her diamonds of wisdom and motherly attitude.

She’s explored various controversial topics, but she’s perhaps best known for allowing her villainous son, Nick Cotton, to fatally overdose on heroin and die. June took a break from the show between 1993 and 1997, apparently because she was unhappy with the removal of co-star Peter Dean, who played Pete Beale.

The soap star now lives in Folkestone, Kent.

Since her effective retirement from acting, Brown has indulged in the things she loves, including smoking, drinking, and eating chocolate. She told the Radio Times in 2019: “I’m going to die of something soon, so why not have some fun?

“[I] I love red wine and also dark chocolate, even though I’m allergic to it and it makes me sneeze. And Guinness helps me keep some weight off.”

She added: “So I don’t have to be careful what I eat or what I drink. What’s the point of counting how many cigarettes I smoke a day? I’ve been taking them for over 70 years .”
